As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe that our families can be linked together forever. Through sacred ordinances in our LDS temples, we are linked with our ancestors.
In the New Testament, Christ told Peter, “I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:19). We believe that Christ gave Peter the keys to bind our families together, and we believe that authority has been restored in our day.
The scripture at the end of the Old Testament in Malachi 4:5-6 leaves us with a promise,
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
We believe that Elijah came in modern times to restore the sealing power so families can be linked together forever. One of our Apostles, Russell M. Nelson, said,
When our hearts turn to our ancestors, something changes inside us. We feel part of something greater than ourselves Our inborn yearnings for family connections are fulfilled when we are linked to our ancestors through sacred ordinances of the temple. (EN)
Our family not only loves to search for additional members so we can be together forever, but we also love to hear stories about how God answered their prayers. My great-grandmother Johanne Kirstine Larsen (1850 – 1939) recorded the following incident in her history.
When she crossed the plains as a young girl, there were times when the Indians started grass fires to burn up all the feed for the oxen, horses, and cattle to discourage the pioneers from moving west. One day, as the wagon train traveled, they could see a fire in the distance, burning toward them. The fire was burning too fast for them to outrun it, and it covered too much land for them to go around it.
Brigham Young, Jr., the company leader, had the men pull the wagons into a circle with the stock inside. He gathered everyone together and stood up on a wagon tongue and said, “Brothers and sisters, we are not here to be destroyed.”
The fire burned closer. Johanne’s eyes stung, and she coughed from the smoke. Brigham Young, Jr. offered a prayer and then pointed to a small cloud in the sky. “There is our deliverance.” The cloud grew bigger and blacker. Soon rain poured from the sky and quenched the fire.
The pioneer company all knelt to thank God for the blessing of safety.
When we join ourselves to our ancestors and discover the way God blessed them, our lives are enriched and our love for Heavenly Father is increased. We invite you to learn more about your family and the way God blessed their lives.

We also hope you will look for spiritual experiences in your family and find the way God blessed your ancestors.
