We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory. (Articles of Faith 1:10)
The tenth Article of Faith is one of the thirteen Articles of Faith penned by Joseph Smith Jr. as a way to explain the beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joseph Smith wrote these thirteen statements of faith in a letter to a newspaper editor named Mr. Wentworth, who had inquired about the beliefs of the church. These Articles of Faith were later adopted as scripture in the book known as the Pearl of Great Price. Latter-day Saints still use these statements today to help clarify and share their faith.
Members of the LDS church believe that the ten lost tribes of Israel are still God’s people. They were scattered throughout the earth and many modern people are descendants of these tribes. We also believe that the members of these tribes will literally be gathered in the last days.
In addition to a physical gathering, the tenth Article of Faith also refers to a spiritual gathering. Any person, no matter what their lineage, can be spiritually adopted into the House of Israel when they are baptized by authority and make covenants with their Father in Heaven. This is one reason why The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints puts such an emphasis on missionary work, sending thousands of missionaries to various countries across the globe every year.
One of the purposes of this gathering is to build Zion, a city that will be known as the New Jerusalem. According to the prophet, Joseph Smith, the first prophet of the LDS church, this New Jerusalem will be located in Jackson County, Missouri in what is now the United States. When Jesus Christ comes again, He will rule the world from the New Jerusalem and the earth will enjoy a wonderful period of peace.
In the time of Adam and Eve, we believe that the earth was in a paradisiacal state, a state from which it fell when Adam and Eve transgressed and were cast out of the Garden of Eden. When Israel is gathered, the city of Zion will be built and the earth itself be renewed into the paradise it once was, a glorious and beautiful place where there will be no more death. It will be like the old version of the earth, only everything will become new again. “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first dearth were passed away; and there was no more sea” (Revelation 21:1).
